The New York Times reported our friend Reggie as saying:

Mr. Fils-Aime said that future DS device will be more tightly integrated with its Wii console. Complete games as well as game samplers will be able to be downloaded into the Wii using its broadband connection, and then transferred wirelessly to the DS.

This is very promising for a few reasons. As talked about since the Gamecube/GBA days, there has been a want to integrate Nintendo’s awesome hand held systems and their consoles but it has never really been taken advantage of save for Crystal Chronicles. What Reggie is saying is far better than just interactivity between the two systems. In addition the Wii will function as a portal to download demos and full games to the DS.

One reason this is a great idea is the same for why Wii Ware is a great idea. It will allow for easier distribution of games from established third parties and from indie game studios. It hasn’t been announced that they will do this but I don’t see why they wouldn’t. If they are reaching out to indie developers for Wii games released through Wii Ware why wouldn’t they do the same for the DS?

Another reason why this comment is promising is that this means Nintendo is finally coming around with downloadable content. Virtual Console games are awesome but I would also like to be able to get new content, which it seems like the DS download center and Wii Ware is going to bring. Once they see how wildly successful this is going to be then we may see a better online system for the games they release.

And this may signal that a Wii hard drive is on the way. If they are going to release full DS games and Wii games then the miniscule storage built into the Wii is going to have to be beefed up. The most obvious solution would be a hard drive. Is there one on the way? No one can say for sure except Iwata, but things are looking good.
